Dundee-Crown graduate Inspires 2,500 Students

To inspire the diverse population of 2,500 students and encourage them to overcome their personal challenges, Dundee-Crown High School (D-CHS) welcomes back one of its graduates, and his wife, to share their personal stories of challenge and triumph.  On Friday, August 23, at 1:45 p.m., Jay and Katy Cramer will empower students in an all-school assembly in the gymnasium.

Jay Cramer, D-CHS class of ’93 and captain of the football team, suffered a broken neck while training as a semi-finalist on Survivor.  Though confined to a power wheel chair, a mere four months after his accident Jay began performing stand-up comedy.  He was named the top newcomer LA Comedian in 2007 and LA’s Funniest Comic in 2009.  Jay’s wife Katy was born a double bi-lateral, above the knee amputee, yet she is a talented singer and actress with many television shows to her credit, including My Name is Earl.  She also finished sixth in the 100 meters at the 2012 Paralympics.  Jay and Katy use their experiences to show students that all challenges can be overcome with a positive attitude and hard work.

The Dundee-Crown Charger Pride Team welcomes Jay and Katy as part of their kickoff for the school initiative that encourages students to behave according to the school’s three expectations: Be responsible. Be respectful.  Be positive.  In classes prior to Jay and Katy’s presentation, teachers will engage students in active, student-centered lessons designed to build a strong and positive school culture, while also focusing on social-emotional growth.  Included in the curriculum are opportunities to discuss personal challenges each will face and how to overcome them.

Goliath, Jay’s Labrador retriever service dog, accompanies the Cramers to all of their speaking engagements.  Some participants say Goliath “Steals the Show.”
